MRI

MRI is:

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), medical diagnostic technique that combines strong magnetic fields, radio waves, and computer technology to create images of the body using the principles of nuclear magnetic resonance. A powerful, versatile, and sensitive tool, MRI can generate thin sections of computerized images of any part of the body, without surgical intervention in a relatively short period of time.

MRI’s are ideal for:

  • Evaluating bulging/herniated disks in spine
  • Diagnosing multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Diagnosing tumors of the pituitary gland and brain
  • Diagnosing infections in the brain, spine or joints
  • Visualizing torn ligaments in extremities
  • Visualizing shoulder injuries
  • Diagnosing tendonitis
  • Evaluating masses in the soft tissues of the body
  • Evaluating bone tumors, cysts
  • Diagnosing strokes in their earliest stages
  • Early detection of injury after automobile or work place accident

MRI Contrast Screening Update Issued by the American College of Radiology (ACR), in the recent months, the industry governing body for radiology, the ACR has issued new pre-screening guidelines prior to the administration of Gadolinium-Based MRI Contrast Agents (GBMCA).

The ACR Contrast Committee and the Subcommittee for MR safety recommends that a recent Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) assessment be reviewed for patients with a history of:

● Renal Disease (including solitary kidney, renal transplant and renal tumour)

● Age > 60

● History of Hypertension

● History of Diabetes

● History of severe hepatic disease/liver transplant/pending liver transplant.

At MAX MRI Imaging Inc., we've adopted the ACR guidelines to ensure the utmost safety for our patients. If you have a prescription for a Gadolinium Based MRI exam and you fit one of the above categories, our highly trained staff will contact your ordering physician, to obtain a copy of your recent lab results outlining the creatinine levels. Once we have obtained your creatinine levels, the GFR will be calculated and then reviewed. If your GFR meets certain criteria and we cannot proceed with the Gadolinium Based exam as ordered, our staff will consult with your ordering physician.

This policy is subject to change as the ACR identifies and issues new recommendations.
